WAR ON TERROR

It all started on 11th of september 2001 with an surprise terrorist attack against targets in New York and Washington D.C. A few days before, Al Qhaida terrorists had murdered an afghan commander Ahmed Masood and seriously wounded his most important lieutenant.

11.9.2001: Al Qhaida terrorists hijacked four passanger planes over USA. One was flown over Washington D.C. and hit Pentagon. Two others were flown over New York City, and hit the twin towers of World Trade Center. Both towers collapsed.

”Clock is 17.00. Something absolutely terrible has happened in United States. Three airplanes have struck buildings in Washington D.C and World Trade Center in New York. No one knows yet how many people have died, but it looks terrible. It looks like a terrorist strike, but I have yet no idea how it was done. They are showing pictures from World Trade Center..the other towers seems to have collapsed. There is huge smoke over New York. Pentagon has been hit too. ”It is a scene of absolute confusion and devastation”, said BBC newsagent. Oh my god, I am just sitting here and staring at the TV. They are talking about thousands of victims. This is surrealistic, like from some horrible catastrophy movie”.

Fourth plane was also hijacked, but passangers resisted, and the plane went down in Pennsylvania countryside, all people on board dying. There was also a report about a bomb attack in front of the State Department and in Capitol, but apparently those were false alarms.

France, Germany and Belgium believe this would endanger their efforts to prevent the war and have therefore issued a veto.

13.2.2003:

  • Political struggle over Iraq continues. No signs of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. “I think a war will start after couple of weeks. USA and Britain probably don`t care if the new UN resolution supports them or not. In both countries there is a new terror alert going on. All the authorities are in top level of alert. They fear a radioactive bomb. People in USA have been buying supplies today, fearing a devastating terror attack. Some kind of a panic is spreading there. • Political struggle over Iraq is heating up. Within couple of days the Security Council will vote over new resolution against Iraq. Both sides are trying to get support from hesitating members. But it is beginning to be apparent that USA will attack with or without the resolution. This thing will be decided with weapons, not with speeches. It feels like brother American has in his sense of power lost his senses. I don`t know if I should hope they would win easily, or with heavy casualties so that they wouldn`t be so eager to invade in the future. But what then, if there someday would be a real threat and Americans would have some “Iraq Syndrome”? So I do not know what to wish for.It seems the attack will start the latest at 19th of this month, but possibly a lot earlier”!

  • USA slowly increases it`s air-strikes in Iraq No-Fly Zone. Today a long range Lancer bomber was used for the first time.

16.3.2003:

  • The Council of War at Azoris was held and message was clear. 17th day would be the last day for diplomatic efforts. It would be the last chance for the Security Council to agree with the demands of USA and the last chance for France to give up the threat of veto. “Everything will be decided tomorrow. After that, a few days for the UN personnel to leave Iraq and then things will start to happen”.

18.3.2003:

  • Today I have just watched TV and killed time. UN Security Council met today and USA, Britain and Spain decided not to ask for a new resolution. It wouldn`t have passed anyway, because France and Russia had promised to use their veto. USA and Britain have today attacked France verbally, forgetting all the other countries that have opposed them. Americans seem to think they have been betrayed, though it is other way around. It feels unbelievable that Britain and USA will go to war without UN resolution. Don`t they realise it makes them war criminals? In it`s hunt for “rogue states” USA has become one! Today Robin Cook resigned from British government as a protest against war”.
